Justin Martin

As the late Oscar Wilde once said: “life is too important to be taken seriously”, an ethos that Justin Martin is sticking with despite achieving soaring success over the last six years as a producer and international DJ.

Justin initially pricked the ears of the electronic music community in 2003 with his first record ‘The Sad Piano’ on Ben Watt’s Buzzin’ Fly label. Everyone in the electronic music food chain got involved, from the A list DJs like Derrick Carter and Pete Tong that were playing the track, to the international music press that were raving about it. It even translated to the German underground, with Poker Flat licensing it for Steve Bug’s ‘Bugnology’ compilation. Like someone that goes bowling for the first time and gets five strikes and a turkey, Justin couldn’t really have hoped for a better entrance. Feeding off the energy of the San Francisco underground and mentored by fellow super producer Claude Vonstroke, Justin was intrinsically involved with the development of dirtybird records, appearing on its first four releases. Justin was soon ready to take flight, releasing a string of solo EPs which flaunted a very unique sound and garnered still more respect among fellow DJS and heavyweight’s of the scene. The Ruby Lounge is a bespoke 350 capacity live music venue (& 500 capacity club space) bang in the heart of Manchester’s Northern Quarter. It’s flash without being showy. Lived in without being beat up. Rock’n’Roll without being clichéd. Timeless but not tired. The Ruby Lounge nods from the 21st century to all those perfect 1950’s Lounges and to a time where live venues gave a damn about the people enjoying them. Here are a few snaps from myself and Adam’s recent trip to spin around the Dubrovnik region. We played a couple of cool gigs, one at the ace Beach Club Cool in Cavtat and also in the central Dubrovnik Klub Lazareti.

Myself and Adam are heading out to the Dubrovnik region for a couple of gigs over the weekend of the 18th and 19th June. It’s been a couple of years since we’ve been so we’re both looking forward to rocking the Dub’ with some proper good house music.

Friday 18th June – Beach Club Cool, Catvat

First up it’s off to Beach Club Cool (there must be a breeze that comes in off the sea) on Friday 18th June where we’ll be playing alongside local resident DJ Slim. Catvat is a stunning little town just down the coast from Dubrovnik.

Saturday 19th June – Club Lazareti, Dubrovnik

Club Lazareti is situated in the historical quarantine houses of Dubrovnik, stretching east of the Old City and is divided into compartments for music and theatre production and an art gallery. This suburban part of the city has been famous for development of urban culture since the early 70′s. The Club consists of an interactive stage and is a combination of inner and outer spaces, considered as three floors: inner, terrace and the beach. The entrance to the beach floor gives one of the most enchanting views on the Old City historical port. The club has seen the likes of Silicone Soul, Gideon Jackson, Valentino Kanzyani, Slam, Tomcraft, Ame and Umek spin of recent.

It’s been a while since we did a Set in Stone party… this is due to many reasons, the main ones being that one member of the SiS team upped sticks and moved to Martin Mere Wildfowl Trust to pursue a career in caring for injured and depressed ducks and the other SiS team member set off to seek funding for a National Chip Museum to be built in Solihull. Unfortunately neither of these ventures worked out so back to Manchester they both came.

After scrounging enough money to purchase two battered old Technics both Tom’s have decided it’s time to throw another FREE Set in Stone party and this time the location is tropic surroundings of Jackson’s Warehouse in the Northern Quarter. Don’t worry, it’s a perfectly safe venue, not some sort of thriller based grotto of silver gloves and plastic surgery receipts, but a very slick and cool bar based right next to the Canal, perfect for a lazy afternoon of boozing and house beats.

On deck duty will be London based, French born Giom who is currently putting out some fantastic house music, it’s got a bit of everything deep, techy, chicagoey… all good solid house music. Adding to the sophistication of the evening will be the residents of one of Manchester finest nights, Cutloose, who will be seeing the afternoon out with a blend of pretty much anything goes… completing the line up are Homegrown-music’s Adam B & Tom Golden (one of the idiots behind the night) and Tom Denton (also another idiot).

Well it’s taken me a while to get my finger out and finish writing the tour diary from our annual trip to the big Z in October 2009.

The Zagreb Film Festival

Wednesday 21st October 2009

And… we’re off… I’m traveling with the ‘bread knife’ to Zagreb via Frankfurt this time, as usual it’s an early start so by the time we hit Germany it’s beer o’clock (around 9am…) I actually opt for coffee though, getting old like. A few hours later we touch down at Pleso airport to a nice chill in the air, we’re picked up by Siniša the Man Utd supporting driver… always a good sight to see.

First stop is Hospitality at the Studentski Center to collect our passes, catch up with the organisers and find out where we are staying. The other Homegrowners have already touched down and are at the apartment, so we head off to meet them. After getting to the apartment and making some makeshift curtains from towels, swigging from the bottle of Johnny Walker that was left in the fridge and trying to fathom out the modem and phone line to no avail we head off for the traditional Zagrebian and Homegrown pastime of having a cold beer.

A little later and after a quick shower and bite to eat we grab our records and CDJ’s and get a lift to the Film Festival. We’re playing in the Teatar & TD room, which is a fantastic small venue at the back of the main cinema at the Studentski Center, it’s an odd layout with one 150/200 capacity room and bar and then an outside area which must accommodate around 300 more.

We set up and I kick off at 10ish with some pitched-down house at around 118bpm. I spin ’till midnight then Woody takes over. Next up at around 1ish is Adam, by this time the room is getting packed out -- cue an hour of deep house with soul, funk and serious groove. Standout tracks from the likes of Tensnake, Tuccillio and Arto Mwambe. Nay completes the individual sets with his trademark tech sounds and then we all go back to back until the lights come on around 4ish. Another awesome night in Zagreb!

We head back to the apartment where Nay and Beatz end up arguing well into daybreak about Claude VonStroke’s track ‘vocal chords’, I give up after an hour or so and go to bed.

Thursday 22st October 2009

The next day we rise lateish and we head down to one of our favourite restaurants that none of us can ever remember the name of, it’s just known as the bear paw place as they serve delicious steaks cut into the shape of erm… well bear’s paws. They also make their own light and dark beers which are ace.

We all meet up at a cocktail bar in the city center and down a few drinks, Woodster and the wife head back to the apartment (not for anything funny you dirty bastards), so myself, Natan and Beatz head down to the Film Festival at around midnight, to be honest I can’t for the life of me recall what music was on in the main room that night… another sign of old age.

We meet a guy called Hrvoje who is well into his house music and the pitched down sounds of the likes of MCDE, Greg Wilson, The Revenge etc -- we spend the next few hours drinking and chatting shit about music and Zagreb. I think we finally roll back at around 5am, then bed.

Friday 23rd October 2009

We’re up and out just after midday which is a bit of a miracle. It’s off to Kino (Cinema) Europa in the city center to meet our good friend Hrvoje (the festival director and legend in the game), we grab a quick coffee and then head off to a restaurant for a long meal of veal, pasta, meat, potatoes, meat, meat and more meat. Good times.

We’re playing in the main room at the festival tonight so we are sensible and head back to the apartment to get ready, get records sorted and smash back some vodka shots… A few more beers and vodkas later and we roll…

The main room at the Studentski Center is located withing the cinema building, and there is a film showing when we get there. So we have to wait until it’s finished until we kick off, the good thing with this was that there would be around 1000 people piling out of the flicks as we start playing -- instant crowd!

At 10 past midnight the doors open and I crank out Catz N Dogz’ Kawa Z Gruntem’ which does the trick and the place gets packed out, happy daze. Myself and Adam go back to back for a couple of hours unleashing some old school Homegrown anthems alongside some new beats and pieces.

After a few more Jagerbombs Nay is due up… he’s a bit pickled after hitting it hard, so we call in the medics how soon sort him out, he pulls off a great set of deep down and moody tech house. The lights come on and we hammer out Fabrice Lig’s ‘The Track’ as our final tune of the night, seminal.

It must take us an hour or so to stumble back to the apartment, where things just get daft…

Saturday 24th October 2009

I wake up at 2pm, get a beer and go back to bed… fortunately Mrs Golden goes on a booze and pizza run to ease us all into the rest of the day… which is spent watching old gig videos and nailing ice cold cans of Ozujsko. Nice.

We all head off to the final parties of the film festival and the after-after-after parties, which are always a great craic, free drinks and the best soundtrack of old movie theme tunes, Euro pop and random 200bpm gypsy techno known to man.

Sunday 25th October 2009

That’s me done… I spend most of the day shaking and walking around Zagreb in a daze, only to be stunned back to life by the shocking result in the Liverpool Vs Utd game which we watch outside a bar in the cool Autumnal Croatian air.

We act all grown up and go for a sit down meal at a new restaurant in the center, Stefano’s (not named after the Mancunian DJ), awesome Risotto and Vino Rouge (apologies for the lack of Sushi eating, I’m not into it unlike every other DJ). It’s a pretty sensible day for us all as we fly back to the UK in the morning.

Monday 26th October 2009

Pack up, say goodbye to friends, get a lift to Pleso, get all our bags thoroughly searched by security, fly to Munich, drink German Beer (I could have stayed at Munich airport for hours doing that), fly back to Manchester, then bed.

Another wicked year at the Zagreb Film Festival, done! Always a pleasure.

Bit of a blast from the past with this mix, it’s Adam’s winning Muzik Magazine Bedroom Bedlam mix from way back in March 2003.

Adam a sparkly 21 – year old who lives in Northwich, Cheshire is carving out a distinctive niche at the more intelligent end of the deep house spectrum. “I started DJing four years ago after hearing Carl Cox at Space”, he says “I began by playing techno, but got funkier as I went along. It’s got to be funky, that’s the key.” His deep techy house mix impressed us with its blend of professionalism, cerebral funkiness and seamless mixing, making it the perfect warm up soundtrack. “I did it live with no edits”, Adam continues. “I can see why people think deep house is boring but you just need the right stuff. It’s the production that makes the difference.” Adam’s already begun to make a name for himself on the Mancunian scene by warming up for Tom Stephan at Sankeys Soap. Last year Adam and a couple of mates put on a night in Northwich to show the locals that “there was more to life than hard house.” Well, those locals must have been grinning like Cheshire cats afterwards because Adam’s unobvious, raw and ultra deep house is something else. No wonder he’s now playing out once a month at a night called Rise. What makes this cd stand out is that Adam’s consciously crafted it as a warm up set – something precious few Readers mixes aim to do – which builds beautifully. What’s more and what’s even rarer, he actually admits that he loves going on before his mates to create a vibe. Well he certainly created a vibe in the IDJ office and we reckon he’d create exactly the right kind of vibe warming up for the likes of Derrick Carter.

We dont get many mix cd’s from double acts, so Adam and Nathan’s two Homegrown discs were a bit of a treat. The dynamic duo always mix back to back, making for a kind of titanic tussle of gargantuan proportions (well kind of). Their styles are remarkably similar, though, so the mix flows incredibly well. The beats are funky (in a kind of tech house way), the sounds deep and the mixing sweet (some long drawn-out affairs, some punchy ‘ohh better drop the mix’ type changes, very few mistakes). Adam and Nathan have put on their own club night (called, unsurprisingly, Homegrown), and are determined to get more gigs. Promoters, take note – these two play some of the freshest sounds this side of Haverford West. Oh Yes.

Adam first started DJing properly when he put on a one off night called Homegrown in his home town of Northwich back in July 2000. The night was run alongside two of his friends (both DJs) Tom Golden & Nathan Landry. Shortly after the night they were contacted by Levi’s and Mixmag to play alongside Tom Stephan on the ‘Levis Student House Party Tour’, which took in Leeds, Newcastle and Sankeys Soap in Manchester.

In 2002 Adam and the other two lads set up www.homegrown-music.com as a base to promote themselves as DJs. The site grew immensely over ve years and is know internationally for its ‘Homegrown Hotmix’ concept in which two guest DJs per month supply mixes for people to stream and download, previous guests have included Jazzanova, Miss Kitten, Mylo, Tom Stephan, Justin Martin, Natural Rhythm, Mazi, Tony Thomas and many more underground DJs. has recently undergone an huge overhaul into a modern blog based site and is summed up by the simple strapline ‘It’s All About Good House Music’.

Djing wise Adam has played at many of the UK’s best clubs including Sankeys Soap, Turnmills, The Bomb, and The Music Box, and has supported some of the best underground DJs in the world today such as Tom Stephan, Audio Bullys, Paul Woolford, James Zabeila, DJ Heather, Jacob London, Nic Fanciulli & Greg Vickers. He has also played all over Europe in countries such as Belguim, Spain, France, Montenegro and has made numerous visits to Croatia where he (alongside the other Homegrown DJs) hold down an annual residency at The Zagreb Film Festival where they play each night of the festival every October.

Adam has joined a small and elite group of DJs that have won I-DJ magazine’s ‘Top Tape’ and also Muzik Magazines ‘Bedroom Bedlam’.

His firrst EP was released in the summer of 2005 on UK label Lost My Dog records and received excellent reviews from DJ & I-DJ magazine as well as making it into the boxes of DJs such as DJ Heather, Joey Youngman, Jay Tripwire, Tyler Stadius and Jimpster to name a few. A second EP (Honey I’ve Lost My Panties EP, written alongside Tom Golden) quickly followed on Pete Dafeet’s Southside Shuffle recordings and this is what I-DJ had to say:

“I’ve lapped up everything these guys have released in their short career. These four trippy little buggers are evidence there is more yet to come. Adam has also released tracks on Greenhouse Recordings and is currently in the process of setting up a small label alongside Tom Golden to put out his own releases.

Moodclub @ Apero / Fluffyclouds @ Silo, Leuven

I’ve just returned from a fantastic few days in Belgium where myself and Adam headed over to play a few gigs in Leuven (aka Stella Town).

First up on Thursday 28th February was Moodclub and the very intimate ‘Apero’ in the towns main square. What a cool little place to spin, full of people wanting to hear good and fresh new music, we played some nice deep house ranging through to some more Chicago sounds.

The Friday was spent visiting the various bars and Cafes around the town, taking things easy. The gig we had that night in Brugge cancelled due to a broken window… so we ended up back in Apero sampling various strong Belgium beers.

The main event of the weekend was on Saturday night at the mighty Fluffyclouds, we had played at Fluffyclouds back in 2004 and did the ‘breakfast slot’ (6am -- 8am), which was wicked as we could take it down a little, real deep heavy moody stuff.

Some friends came over on the Saturday afternoon so we headed out to sink a few Duvel alongside Kelvin and friend… it did get a little messy!

Managed to get to the club at around 2am, a Red Bull and 2x water later and all was good. The club, what a place! Silo is a fantastic venue, 1000 people crammed in, amazing sound system and lights and some heavy, heavy house music.

Ken ECB and Kelvin both played solid sets which went down really well and myself and Adam were again doing the early morning slot which we were both relishing.

Standout tracks of the night were Silicone Soul -- Chico Laa (H-Foundation Remix), the latest Buzzin Fly release, Soul Vision -- Tracey In My Room and Milton Jackson -- Cycles.

Finally managed to get to bed around 10am, was a awesome night! Massive thanks go out to all in Belgium, Jeroen, Kristoff, Pierre, Tristan, Kelvin and Remy! Viva Leuven!

Croatia Tour 2006 – 01.08.06 – 08.08.06

Tuesday 1st August 06

Right, off to Croatia we go… head down to the airport in the avo’ as the Aussies say. The flight is delayed so we hit the pub and have a quick pint before settling back for the 3hr flight that somehow only takes just over 2 hrs, the pilot must have been speeding, disgusting.

We arrive in Dubrovnik just after 10pm local time and are greeted by our friends who bundle us into a minibus and we set off on the 2-3 hr drive to the island of Korcula (we are meant to be playing at 12am).

The James Bond action takes over as we board a speedboat and make the 2mile trip over to the island, arriving shortly after 12.30am. A bit of spliff-induced rally driving later we get to the club and straight onto the decks.

So with a large crowd gathering I kick off with the devastating Darkmountaingroup’s ‘Lose Control’ and after being passed a large vodka, I get fully into it quickly! The floor is packed as I finish and hand over to Adamwho pitches up the tempo and plays an awesome set of strobe bothering house music, Nathan takes over shortly after 5am (as Adam chats up a couple of Californian girls) and plays until a thunderstorm stops everything… and we proceed to get piss wet through, as well as slightly pissed.

Wednesday 2nd August 2006

Wake up at 10am, feeling slightly rough… no water in the apartment so make a trek to find a shop, apart from we are staying in the middle of nowhere. All we can find is a shit car wash with 2 bottles of coke and 6 bottles of water, we buy them all. Spend an hour back at the apartment watching a lizard crawl around the room.

Finally feel human by late afternoon so we head off to the town of Korcula, great seafood risotto and relax with some drinks for the rest of the day.

Thursday 3rd August 2006

Get picked up mid afternoon and make the 2hr trip back to Dubrovnik with Zoran the Croatian DJ and part time stoned rally driver, stopping to admire the fantastic views of the islands.

Arrive in the city late evening, get changed and head straight out for some good Biftek (Croatian for Beefsteak, or a new techno sub genre) steaks, we all then hit the bars and proceed to have a couple of shandys each…

If your in Dubrovink check out a small bar called Fresh, owned by Tokyo John and get some of the cocktails downed, all good stuff and very lethal! You can even make your own and if they are good enough they end up on the cocktail wall, check out our friend Russ’s ‘Supernova’ one. End up in Latino Club Fuego till 6am, drinking and dancing to euro house and speeded up latin folk music played by our rally driver dj friend, make it back to the apartment around 7am and pass out.

Friday 4th August 2006

Woke up with a shock at 10am, fucking boiling and sweating the alcohol from last nights activities, jumped on a bus and headed to some friends apartment to have some kip and a shower as I didn’t fancy trying the Trainspotting style shower at the accommodation we were in. A good kip later and after some more biftek we headed back to see the venue.

This was probably the most surreal venue for I gig I had seen, it was three massive bombed out hotels that had been used as a military base during the war a few years back, it was quite eerie walking around seeing bomb holes and bullet holes all over the place, we popped back to get our records and then went back to the venue… then the local police stopped us… that was some scary shit being searched by them, they took all our records out ripped the lining out of the bags, threatened to take Nay to the Police station as he didn’t have his passport on him. Was pretty fucked up, saw loads of people turned away and a few being piled into the back of vans.

Once we got to the gig there we’re police all up in the venue, which made it quite a tense atmosphere, the promoters were very unsure about if anyone would come. I hit the decks after Adam and a few people we’re starting to get onto the dancefloor, after an hour or so it was packed out and they we’re going mental to the homegrown beats. Nay took over and then a thunderstorm hit…

Records got blow off the decks, we all got drenched, all the equipment got ruined, lost my headphones, we all managed to shelter in the remains of the hotel… and I made a dash into the storm to retrieve a bottle of vodka, which was niiiice! The storm only lasted half an hour or so, but the party had to finish as the decks we’re bust, shame as there were hundreds queuing up to get in, was defo a different gig!

Saturday 5th August 2006

Off to Montenegro, as far as we were aware the gig was half an hour away, little did we know it was half an hour to the border… it was 3 and half hours to the gig!

We crossed the border by foot and were picked up by one of the djs, he did mention it was 300km, but I thought he must have been mistaken and meant 30km! The drive was long but the views of the mountains and coastal road were stunning. We got to the town of Ulcinj, which was 10 miles from Albania at around 9pm, went straight to the club which was located on the beach and set back into the cliffs, was an awesome club.

We grabbed a bite to eat and then hit the decks, the owner was showing me records he wanted playing, Bob Sinclair etc, so I just said ‘Yeah, no probs’ and kicked off with some Joey Youngman cuts! We partied it up until the club got raided by the police, led by some man mountain of a guy in full combats and beret, he looked like Jean Claude Van Damme in Street Fighter, they walked round for 5 mins then left and the party continued, was good fun and everyone we met there were sound and gave us lots of booze!

Sunday 6th August 2006

Got up at 10am, went back to the club to await a lift, at 11am a dodgy looking Mercedes taxi rocks up, out gets the driver with fag in mouth, this can’t be it I though… it was.

The drive back wasn’t as bad as I expected, and took less time as we caught a ferry, but the taxi driver insisted on dropping us off round the corner from the Croatian border apparently everything is ‘Fine… but a little fucked up’ with the border crossing, we walked the half mile to the border shitting it about them being funny with us, but they only checked my passport then let us all through, very strange.

We got back to Dubrovnik at 3pm, and Adam and myself hit the beers good time! Got some food and had some rum on a pirate ship, gaaaarrrrr! Had an excellent night out on the local Karlikivo beer in an Irish bar and passed out sometime early in the morning after giving some good abuse to an unhelpful taxi driver.

Monday 7th August 2006

A day off! Hit the beach and went for a swim, then relaxed in the beach bar which was super slick, ran back to the apartment (up 240 steps) to avoid a storm.

We all went out for a final meal then went to the beach bar and watched all the posing locals dancing (as well as Woody’s dirty dancing with two local fittys) and the shit DJ who must have been deaf as his monitor was on +11. Bit of an earlier night (3am), and packed our stuff for a flight in the morning.

Had an amazing / scary / completely different time over the last week and can’t wait to get back to the area next year!

The final gig of our Balkan tour of 2006 was in the far corner of Montenegro at the Millenium open air club on the harbor of Ulcinj.

Mi Casa, Chester

It’s always a pleasure to head over to the City Bar in Chester for the monthly house shindig that is ‘Mi Casa’.

This small but excellent little house night recently celebrated its 2nd birthday and myself, Adam, Nathan and Woody all popped over on Saturday 7th October to spin some beats. I was pretty knackered after being out in Manchester the night before at Development and moving house that same day, but as soon as I hit the decks all was forgotten!

They definitely know their house music over in Chester and all enjoyed the sounds of Derrick Carter’s remix of Modjo’s ‘Lady’, Woody took over after me and laid down some slick house grooves, followed by Adam and Nathan’s back to back special sprinkled with classic house tracks and remixes.

Hosts Chris and Matt are always welcoming and its always a great laugh when we are invited back.

The four of us headed over to Menorca to spin at the simply stunning Cova Den Xoroi, set into the cliffs – check out Woody’s guns.

Myself and Adam warmed up for Nic Fanciulli, Paul Woolford and Gregory Vickers in the Soap bar, back when Sankeys was the plain old, dirty underground rave den that was called Sankeys Soap.

We joined the legendary Audio Bullys at the even more legendary Bomb in Noddingham for an evening of straight up ‘ouse music. The MC guy wasn’t that bad either… ‘can I get a re-re-re-rewind’. No.

Myself and Adam jibbed the train down to London to play in room two of the legendary Turnmills.
